ASSISTANT CHIEF NURSING OFFICER

Manages effective integration and operation of clinical departments and functions. Provides direct and indirect supervision of clinical departments and staff to include nursing, ancillary departments and outpatient services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.); or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current Colorado State Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • The following valid certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess good phone etiquette.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Must have good public relations skills, being able to manage difficult or emotional customer situations, respond quickly to the needs of the customer and solicit customer feedback to improve service.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Performs responsibilities related to the Administration of clinical responsibilities.
  • Reviews enterprise-wide clinical processes and recommends changes in, or better utilization of facilities, services and staff.
  • Responsible for current licensure of non-physician clinical employees.
  • Serves on appointed committees.
  • Collaborates effectively with the CNO, Risk Management, and Performance Improvement to develop, implement, and monitor performance improvement in compliance wit h Standards of Care.
  • Provides clinical leadership in conjunction with the CNO/Nursing Supervisor and assumes the responsibility for nursing administrative decisions in the absence of the CNO/Nursing Supervisor.
  • Areas of focus include nurse staffing and assignments, performance evaluation, clinical and administrative decision-making related to nursing care, and continuous improvement of nursing and rehabilitative care.
  • Establishes clinical policies and procedures in cooperation with other hospital officials.
  • Interprets and administers clinical and non-clinical policies and procedures.
  • Recommends purchase of supplies and equipment.
  • Effectively communicates with leadership, peers and subordinates to facilitate clinical operations.
  • Prepares and submits budget, records, reports, and statistical data as needed or requested.
  • Oversees hospital-wide clinical operations and recommends procedures, treatments or other courses of action to assist medical staff and/or administration.
  • Provides a quarterly summary of incidents, complaints and claims to the Chief Executive Officer and hospital board, as requested.
  1. Performs responsibilities related to patient care
  • Actively and concurrently perform nursing services as needed to support patient care in a staff or charge nurse capacity.
  • Oversees as case manager and discharge planner to assure that the patient progresses through the continuum of care and is discharged to the least restrictive environment.
  • Utilizes electronic medical record or other approved systems for care coordination/documentation.
  • Participates with QA/PI, patient safety, and infection control in the institution. Ensures committees are current, ongoing, and that activities are guided by all appropriate regulatory agencies.
  1. Performs responsibilities related to staff relations, procedures, and training/recruitment.
  • Leads team building activities to promote team cohesiveness and effective performance.
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, evaluating, and terminating non-physician clinical personnel.
  • Mediates conflicts.
  • Assists the Nursing Supervisor and Chief Nursing Officer with assuring adequate staffing on ACU, ECU and ED 24/7
  • Assists the Chief Nursing Officer with hiring, terminations, and disciplinary actions for all nursing service personnel, interprets, implements, and enforces appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Assists the Chief of Nursing Officer and Nurse Educator with education, training, and on boarding of nursing staff.
  • Assists with coverage as needed including serving as a Unit RN to ensure appropriate staffing.
  • Provides administrative oversight of nursing and clinical education and training activities.
  • Establishes and maintains work schedules and assignments of resident professional staff members, including paid time off requests, staff development, performance evaluations (at least annually) and implements disciplinary actions/terminations as necessary.
  • Sets a positive example and uses a professional approach to analyzing and resolving conflict.
  • Conducts recurrent staff meetings as needed for updates, clarification, and communication to enhance and maintain clinical operations.
  • Investigates and analyzes root causes, patterns and trends that could result in compensatory or sentinel events and assists in identifying and implementing corrective action where appropriate.

 

  1. Conducts and participates in utilization review activities.
  • Conducts concurrent medical record review using specific indicators and criteria as approved by medical staff, TJC, CMS, and other state agencies.
  • Evaluates resource compensation related to expected outcomes.
  • Ensures that patient care is appropriate and necessary.
  • Promotes effective and efficient utilization of services from admission through discharge.
  • Assists physicians and administration to control expense and produce desired outcomes.

  • Adheres to department goals, objectives, standards of performance, and policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with quality patient care and regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluates patient satisfaction and quality of care provided.

  • Refers cases where patients and/or family would benefit from counseling required to complete complex discharge plan to social worker.
  • This is an exempt position and must have the ability to work nights and weekends as necessary.
  • Directs and participates in the development and implementation of patient care policies and protocols in order to provide advice and guidance in handling special cases or patient needs.
