DIRECTOR OF PHARMACY

The Director of Pharmacy directs, manages, and coordinates all aspects of the inpatient and retail pharmacy operations. Develops and implements all pharmacy policies to ensure compliance with patient care, quality standards. They also have responsibility for the activities defined for the role of a pharmacist by the Colorado State Board of Pharmacy.

Qualifications

  • Degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Licensed Pharmacist in the State of Colorado
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Prior retail pharmacy experience
  • Two (2) years of experience managing a hospital pharmacy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (i.e. Excel, Word and Outlook)

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Oversees all aspects of department operations effectively and efficiently.
  • Oversees day-to-day operations, which includes problem solving issues and ensuring effective processing.
  • Develops and documents department procedures to ensure consistent and accurate processing.
  • Manages retail operations of pharmacy, including sales and cash management.
  • Works with other departments in providing services and resources.
  • Monitors workflow and departmental processes.
  • Develops and maintains department policies.
  • Sets and achieves department goals and objectives.
  1. Manages the safety, efficiency and integrity of operations within the pharmacy including display, customer service, and ensuring compliance with all Federal, State, and local laws governing the practice and operation of a retail pharmacy.
  • Uses all applicable systems effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and disposal of hazardous waste drugs.
  • Monitors and maintains drug and supply inventory levels consistent with guidelines including review of daily drug orders.
  • Assures delivery of a safe, efficient and educational pharmacy experience to the customer.
  1. Utilizes professional pharmacy skills including reasonable and current knowledge of drugs, drug therapies, dosing guidelines, drug interactions and other aspects of pharmaceutical care.
  • Reviews prescriptions issued by Physician, and or other prescriber to assure accuracy and determine formulas and ingredients.
  • Compounds medications, using standard formulas and processes such as weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients.
  1. Oversees and performs employee relations functions effectively to promote a positive work environment, influence retention and enhance communication.
  • Works with department management to ensure effectiveness in the application of employee relations within their areas of accountability.
  • Develops, supports, and actively seeks activities and establishes an environment that promotes recognition and retention for employees.
  • Communicates effectively and provides feedback to staff which may include department meetings, individual employee meetings, etc….
  • Addresses employee issues in an effective and timely manner.
  • Communicates with Administrator and HR regarding employee issues appropriately in an effort to obtain guidance and reduce potential organizational liability.
  • Enforces and interprets policies and procedures with employees, as necessary.
  • Administers annual performance appraisal process for staff, with feedback for positive reinforcement of strengths and opportunities for growth/improvement.
  1. Provides accurate, efficient and appropriate pharmaceutical distribution services to patients by properly interpreting providers’ drug orders and dispensing the appropriate medications utilizing the accepted departmental programs for these activities.
  • Reviews patient medical and pharmaceutical records and monitors for efficient drug therapy, drug interaction, adverse drug reactions, contraindication, allergies and sensitivities.
  • Reviews prescriptions issued by Physician, and or other prescriber to assure accuracy and determine formulas and ingredients.
  • Communicates directly with providers, nurses and other ancillary departments regarding questions concerning patient drug therapy.
  • Directly responsible for the day to day functional operations including all aspects of medication procurement, storage, distribution, management. Applies expertise to medication related equipment and systems.
  • Supervises and teaches technical support on duty of pharmacy.
  • Plans and implements procedures in hospital pharmacy according to hospital policies and legal requirements.
  • Observes nursing personnel at work and recommends quality assurance techniques to ensure safe, legal, and ethical practices.
  • Compounds medications, using standard formulas and processes such as weighing, measuring, and mixing ingredients.
  1. Provides expert consultation with other health care professionals in development of drug-related matters.
  • Facilitates appropriate drug therapy management throughout the continuum of care, communicating appropriately with inpatient and outpatient providers in the best interest of the patient and safe medication use.
  • Maintains recognized expertise as a consultant to team members in resolution of complex clinical problems in assigned specialty practice area. This includes the provision of evidence-based knowledge and an evaluation of resulting value to patients and the organization.
  • Participates as the drug expert on multidisciplinary committees and performance improvement teams, as assigned.
  • Assures inter-professional communications with team members and interdisciplinary communications with assigned specialty practice areas.
  • Monitors all patient drug therapy for cost effectiveness and communicates all possible cost saving recommendations to the patient’s provider(s).
  • Confers with computer personnel to develop computer programs for pharmacy information management systems, patient and department charge systems, and inventory control.
  • Attends staff meetings to advise and inform hospital medical staff of drug applications and characteristics.
  • Serves on Pharmacy/Therapeutic Committee.
  1. Controls the purchase and inventory maintenance of all pharmaceuticals and related substances and supplies.
  • Manages the storage and distribution of all pharmaceutical items and ensures compliance by departmental locations and patient care units with established inventory control standards and procedures and federal and state regulations.
  • Reviews and assesses the pharmacy’s revenue generation; ensures the department’s continued compliance with reimbursement requirements and the maintenance of a competitive pricing structure.
  • Prepares and analyzes reports reflecting utilization of services and revenue information and initiates responsive actions.
  • Directs and participates in the preparation of the annual budget for the pharmacy; reviews the budget performance of the department and analyzes and identifies variances.

 

  1. Complies with and maintains Colorado State and Federal licensure of Haxtun Hospital District Pharmacy including but not limited to Drug Enforcement Licensure.

 

  1. Performs and maintains documentation.
  • Maintains documentation of performance measures and quality improvement efforts.

 

  1. Communicates effectively.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with other health team members.
  • Identifies and recognizes abnormal symptoms/changes in patient condition. Appropriately reports condition changes to medical provider.

 

  1. Promotes and ensures patient safety in performance of all responsibilities.
  • Fulfills prescriptions in a timely and safe manner according to physician orders.
  • Demonstrates proficient technical/clinical skills and operational knowledge of equipment.
  • Informs and involves physician regarding patient care issues in a timely and appropriate manner.
  1. Recruits and develops a qualified and productive workforce.
  • Maintains and creates reporting job descriptions.
  • Recruits effectively for department positions by following established hiring practices and guidelines.
  • Orients new employees in a thorough manner to department and organizational operations and procedures.
  • Provides training to department staff in an appropriate and thorough manner.
  • Offers opportunity for continuing education by sharing own knowledge, accessing internal opportunities, and considering external opportunities to support the continued development of department staff.
  • Monitors and verifies the compliance of staff in regards to maintaining required licenses and certifications, as applicable.
  1. Oversees departmental financial operations.
  • Maintains, develops, monitors and reports budgets, expenses, variances and strategic planning for department.
  • Maintains timekeeping records and updates appropriately and accurately for department staff.
  • Works with vendors and management, as appropriate, to negotiate best value purchases.
  • Guides and participates in annual budgeting planning process for areas of responsibility.

Base Wage: $118,934.40/annual (additional salary commensurate with education and experience)
