Receives or obtains specimens for analysis and applies techniques used in fields of microbiology, hematology, serology, clinical chemistry, morphological examinations and procedures and provides accurate, reliable, reproducible, and timely test results utilizing the best technology available to provide our physicians with the means to treat our patients, from newborn to elderly, in a manner consistent with quality healthcare.  Records test results in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory agency requirements (FDA, AABB, CLIA, etc.) to achieve the best quality patient care in accordance with the philosophy, goals and objectives of Haxtun Hospital District.


  • Associates Degree of Applied Sciences in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Current MLT (ASCP) or equivalent (CLS) certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in a medical lab environment

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrates basic knowledge and understanding of established testing procedures and protocol by remaining abreast of procedure manual and updates and performance in the following areas of laboratory testing: Hematology, Clinical Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Transfusion Services, Immunology/Serology, Phlebotomy, Point of Care testing and other laboratory disciplines.
  • Performs patient testing in an organized and efficient manner, through accuracy of reporting, timeliness of analysis, and cost-effective process.
  • Performs quality control protocol and basic evaluation of the quality control data including following established protocols, documentation, recognizing and resolving out of control scenarios.
  • Follows the established guidelines and protocols for test reporting that includes; proper handling of critical values, proper reporting of STAT values, recognition and resolution of problem scenarios in a professional manner and reviewing departmental and computerized logs for completeness of testing results.
  • Performs competency and proficiency challenges in timely and acceptable manner.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge and ability to interact with the laboratory/hospital information system computer functions as it relates to the ordering, testing, and reporting areas.
  • Participates in the departmental quality assurance initiative in pursuit of quality services under direction of laboratory supervisor or co-worker.
  • Performs waived, moderate, and high complexity testing according to CLIA regulations without supervision.
  1. Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, and urine to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.
  • Analyzes laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results.
  • Enters data from analysis of medical tests and clinical results into computer for storage.
  • Provides technical information about test results to health care providers, family members and researchers.
  • Collects and studies blood samples, to determine the number of cells, their morphology, or their blood group, blood type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques. Blood group, type and compatibility is not done with microscopic technique so either they need to be removed or the microscopic techniques does
  • Handles infectious material using universal precautions.
  • Troubleshoots instrumentation problems.
  1. Participates and monitors activities related to continuous quality control such as variance, change of status and quality assurance improvements.
  • Adheres to the laboratory quality control policies, and documents all quality control activities, instrument, procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follows laboratory’s established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, and either correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant or director.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  • Reviews and suggests improvements to existing laboratory procedures. Assists in evaluation and testing of new procedures.
  • Records results of all tests, quality control, and proficiency surveys properly. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Helps keeps track of laboratory workload and quality control for monthly statistics.
  • Fills out all laboratory log sheets properly; including preventive maintenance, instrument repair, temperature records, etc.
  • Maintains working knowledge of standard operating procedures including; specialized analytical instrumentation, clinical correlations of test results, quality control requirements and preventative maintenance procedures.
  1. Performs general phlebotomy, including venipuncture, capillary or finger stick, heel puncture therapeutic phlebotomy and prepares these specimens for testing.
  • Uses Universal Precautions when collecting or preparing specimens.
  • Maintains knowledge on different test requirements and special procedures.
  • Knows the criteria for accepting and rejecting specimen.
  • Decides when a test needs to be repeated, reported or redrawn based on sound judgment of specimen condition and previous results.
  • Reports, charts, and mails test results as required. Calls panic value results per established guidelines.
  • Follows laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis and reporting as designated by CLIA and other regulatory agencies.


  1. Maintains responsibility for the performance and completion of defined equipment, instrument maintenance protocols and ensuring adequate supply levels.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves instrument malfunctions to assure availability of equipment.
  • Performs appropriate instrument maintenance according to manufacturer or laboratory requirements.
  • Sets up and operates department instruments and equipment in a prescribed manner.
  • Performs daily start up and shut down procedures.
  • Cleans the laboratory as needed and keeps it clean and orderly.
  • Assures adequate supplies are available by monitoring inventory and notifying the proper person for when re-ordering is necessary.
  • Makes minor adjustments and repairs to instruments along with calibrations and preventive maintenance.


  1. Communicates effectively.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with other health team members.
  • Identifies and recognizes abnormal symptoms/changes in patient condition, established priorities, and takes appropriate action. Appropriately reports condition changes to medical provider.


  1. Promotes and ensures patient safety in performance of all responsibilities.
  • Administers procedures in a timely and safe manner according to health care provider orders.
  • Demonstrates proficient technical/clinical skills and operational knowledge of equipment.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics, transfer/lifting techniques to minimize fall risk to patient and injury to self.
  • Adheres to infectious disease controls as appropriate including isolation procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE), proper use of hand washing and gloves.
  • Follows proper procedures disposal of sharps and hazardous materials.

Base Wage: $21.74/hour (additional salary commensurate with education and experience)
