Meet Craig McCarty, MD, PhD

Dr. Craig McCarty is a board-certified family physician and serves as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Haxtun Health. With decades of experience caring for rural and underserved populations throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota, he is dedicated to providing comprehensive, compassionate care for patients of all ages.

A Colorado native raised in a rural community, Dr. McCarty understands the unique healthcare needs of agricultural families and small-town residents. He is pleased to return to Haxtun Health, where he combines direct patient care with leadership focused on strengthening healthcare services for the region.

Education & Training

Dr. McCarty completed his Family Medicine Residency at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota, a program with a strong emphasis on rural healthcare.

He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Saint George’s University School of Medicine and holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Quantitative Ecology and a Master of Science in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University. He also earned bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado Boulder.

He works closely with medical staff, nursing teams, and hospital leadership to support patient safety, clinical excellence, provider development, and the continued growth of healthcare services available to the communities Haxtun Health serves.

His leadership experience includes serving as a Trauma Director, EMS Medical Supervisor, educator for future healthcare professionals, and advocate for expanding access to rural healthcare.

Commitment to Rural Healthcare

Throughout his career, Dr. McCarty has focused on improving healthcare access in rural communities. He has served as a clinical preceptor for medical, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner students and remains passionate about mentoring the next generation of healthcare providers.

His work has consistently centered on ensuring that patients in smaller communities can receive high-quality healthcare close to home.

Life Outside of Medicine

When he is not caring for patients, Dr. McCarty enjoys camping, fishing, hunting, agriculture, metalworking, mechanics, computers, botany, reading, and education. His appreciation for rural life and the outdoors reflects the values that have guided both his personal and professional journey.
