Well-Child Checks – Helping Kids Thrive in School and Life
Preventive care, early screenings, and classroom give-back make a difference for area students
As summer settles in and families begin planning for the upcoming school year, Haxtun Health is encouraging parents to schedule well-child checks as an important step in keeping children healthy, confident, and ready to learn.
Haxtun Health’s annual “Healthy Student, Happy Teacher” campaign reflects its commitment to both student wellness and classroom success. By encouraging families to schedule well-child exams and giving back to local classrooms in the fall, the program helps ensure children are healthy, supported, and ready to learn.
The Importance of Well-Child Checks
Well-child visits are about more than checking height and weight. They provide a comprehensive look at a child’s growth, development, and overall well-being. These appointments give providers the opportunity to monitor milestones, ensure immunizations are up to date, and address any concerns before they become larger issues.
Heidi Carpenter, Clinic Manager at Haxtun Health, emphasizes that these visits are an essential part of proactive care. “Well-child exams are one of the most important ways we can partner with families to support a child’s long-term health,” Carpenter said. “They allow us to build relationships with both the child and the parents, so we can provide guidance that is personalized and meaningful.”
Empowering Families
In a rural community, access to consistent care and trusted providers can make a significant difference. Carpenter adds that these visits also help establish a medical home where families feel comfortable asking questions and seeking support. “We want parents to feel confident that they have a team walking alongside them,” she said. “We are here not only to provide care, but to empower them to make informed decisions for their children.”
Tawney Rueter, FNP-C, highlights the importance of establishing health baselines early in life. “When we see children regularly, we are able to track patterns in growth, behavior, and development over time,” Rueter explained. “Those baseline measurements help us recognize when something is outside of the norm and address it early.”
Prevention
Preventive screenings are another key component of well-child exams. From vision and hearing checks to developmental screenings, these tools help identify concerns that may not be immediately visible. “Screenings give us insight into areas that can impact a child’s success in school and daily life,” Rueter said. “Catching something early often means simpler interventions and better outcomes.”
How Haxtun Health Gives Back
Beyond the clinical benefits, Haxtun Health is also reinforcing its commitment to the community in a meaningful way. For every well-child checks completed, the organization gives back to local classrooms in the fall. This initiative helps provide teachers with additional resources while directly supporting the educational environment children return to each school year.
“At the end of the day, our goal is to support the whole child,” Carpenter said. “Health and education go hand in hand, and this is one way we can invest in both.”
Partnering Together
Families are encouraged to schedule appointments early, as availability becomes more limited closer to the start of the school year. By taking this step now, parents can ensure their children are prepared not only physically, but emotionally and developmentally for the year ahead.
“We truly see ourselves as partners with parents,” Rueter said. “Together, we can help children grow into healthy, thriving individuals.”
