The Importance of Early Detection
Colorectal cancer is a significant health concern in the United States. Each year, approximately 107,320 new cases of colon cancer and 46,950 new cases of rectal cancer are diagnosed. It is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths when combining men and women.
Early detection is vital for several reasons:
Improved Survival Rates: When colorectal cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is around 90%. However, if the cancer has spread to other organs, the survival rate drops significantly.
Prevention: Screening can detect precancerous polyps, which can be removed before they develop into cancer.
Less Extensive Treatment: Early-stage cancer often requires less aggressive treatment, potentially avoiding the need for chemotherapy or radiation.
Reduced Healthcare Costs: Early detection and treatment are generally less costly compared to treating advanced cancer.
Available Screening Methods
Several effective screening tests are available for colorectal cancer:
- Colonoscopy: This comprehensive test allows for the visualization of the entire colon and rectum and the removal of polyps during the same procedure.
- Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT): A yearly test that checks for hidden blood in the stool.
At Haxtun Health, Dr. Settergren, Dr. Giang, and Dr. McKenna are dedicated to providing these essential screening services. By raising awareness and encouraging regular screenings, we can make a significant impact in the fight against colorectal cancer.
