Tawney Rueter, FNP-C: Rooted in Rural Care
Tawney Rueter, FNP-C, has always believed that healthcare is about more than treating illness. For her, it’s about building trust, forming lasting relationships, and helping people take ownership of their health. Now practicing at Haxtun Health Clinic, Tawney brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for rural medicine to the community she’s long called home.
Tawney’s Journey into Healthcare
Raised in Holly, Colorado, she started working in a local nursing home at age 14 and became a CNA by 16. She earned her Associate Degree in Nursing from Otero Junior College in 2006, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing from Colorado Mesa University. She is board-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and holds certifications in ACLS, BLS, and PALS.
Her clinical background is both broad and deep. Tawney has worked in emergency departments, inpatient care, labor and delivery, newborn care, women’s health, and chronic disease management. She previously served as a registered nurse at Haxtun Hospital from 2010 to 2015, before stepping away to pursue her graduate education. Her return to Haxtun is intentional and heartfelt.

“I chose to come back because of the strong community relationships, the opportunity for professional autonomy, and the more relaxed pace that allows me to focus on what matters most—my patients,” she said.
Care Tawney Provides at Haxtun Health
Tawney provides care across the lifespan, from infants to older adults. Her approach emphasizes wellness, prevention, and meeting patients where they are. Whether through in-clinic visits, telehealth, or home visits, she tailors care to fit the needs of each individual.
“I enjoy helping people manage chronic conditions and work toward their health goals,” she said. “It’s not about quick fixes. It’s about listening, educating, and supporting people in a way that empowers them.”
